Receiving a Misdelivered Email
A living-room salon in London on One Reading the Views, the 2017 email project with artist Zhong Jialing, published as a book in 2018.

This time, at Le Ren’s home, I’d like to share with you an art project that took place by email: One Reading the Views.
During the National Day “Golden Week” holiday in October 2017, more than two hundred recipients received eight emails from a sender signing herself “+0”, sent from Siteland, New Island and Yee-guo Island. In the emails, sent one a day, “+0” described following the itinerary of Dream Travel International Travel Agency with her friends – a group of si nai, Cantonese for middle-aged housewives.
In reality, Zhong Jialing, who wrote the emails, spent those days at home in Guangzhou looking after her two daughters, and went on an outing to Baiyun Mountain with her friends, all wearing the travel agency’s group T-shirts. The email project was an art action that NewGate Studio assigned to Zhong Jialing. My role was that of a curator working alongside the artist, and the recipients were friends of the three of us – though when the emails arrived, most had forgotten we’d ever asked whether they wanted to take part in an artwork, and wrote back: “Who are you?”
A year later, this summer, One Reading the Views came out as a book, designed by the artist. It contains not only the eight letters Zhong Jialing wrote but also many of the replies we received.
This project wasn’t an exhibition in a museum; it happened right in the middle of life. So chatting about it in a living room seems just right.
