The Place of “Chinese”: From the Chinese Arts Centre in Manchester to esea contemporary“华人”的位置：从曼彻斯特华人艺术中心到esea contemporary

The third International Academic Forum of “Trans-Southeast Asia” research, held online by Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts on 8–9 July 2023 alongside its Trans-Southeast Asia Triennial. It had three strands: rethinking globalisation; geo-art history and modern art education across South China and Southeast Asia; and more experimental methods of exhibition-making and museum practice.
I spoke in the first session, Rethinking Globalisation: Contest and Connection (chaired by Shen Sen, with Li Gongming as respondent), alongside Yap Sau Bin, Lin Shuchuan, Carol Yinghua Lu and Dong Bingfeng. My presentation, The Place of “Chinese”: From the Chinese Arts Centre in Manchester to esea contemporary, traced how the Manchester institution changed its name and its sense of whom it serves.
The research grew into a paper written in 2024, “From Chinese Art Center to esea contemporary”, forthcoming in 《新美术馆学》New Museology (2028).
