Poster for Day One of FLOW (4 October 2018), Asia-Art-Activism at Raven Row
FLOW was three days of events, performances, talks and screenings (4–6 October 2018) by the Asia-Art-Activism Research Network, three months into its year-long residency at Raven Row. It was initiated by Erika Tan in association with Researchers-in-Residence Bettina Fung and Ada Hao and founding member Annie Jael Kwan, with the participation and support of the AAA network, Iniva, the Live Art Development Agency and Raven Row.
I took part in Day Two, Circulations (Friday 5 October, 5.30–8.30pm): “a series of presentations and discussion which utilise ideas of ‘circulating’ to connect ideas around agency, archives, economic status, and art world movements.”
- Cuong Pham opened with a listening session, rummaging through vinyl records.
- Fyerool Darma followed with “I cut over the seas, with a mournful song to embrace your soul”, an oratory performance to comfort the skull of a Riau Islander held in the Hunterian Museum in London.
- Erika Tan connected ideas of misplaced objects and sonic memes to a screening and discussion of her work, linking to “Spinning Beats”, a second listening session with Cuong Pham on the vinyl record through a social and historical lens.
- Nie Xiaoyi presented her curatorial methodology of ‘marching’, followed by an around-the-room discussion.
Throughout the three days Chi Bagtas and Glo Orpilla (PASAWAY) ran PASAWAY SARI SARI STORE #000, a place to share, exchange and network.
