Annotated Shanghai上海艺术天书

Annotated Shanghai 上海艺术天书 is a pink, bilingual, annotated map of Shanghai’s art spaces, which I started with You Yiyi and Scene Peng in autumn 2025. We made the first edition in our spare time over October and November, in time for Shanghai Art Week.

The map covers museums, galleries and non-profits, and also the spaces tucked into basements, car washes and phone-repair shops. It divides the city into different areas – from the “Wutong District” (the former French Concession) to Suhe Bay, Xintiandi and Pudong – and every place gets a short note, written the way you would describe it to a friend: a bit sharp-tongued at times, but meant sincerely. It is closer to a notebook of observations on the city than to a guide. The artist Leon Eckert (NYU Shanghai IMA) joined us as special collaborating artist.

We printed 6,000 copies and left them at more than ten pick-up points around the city. They went quickly and we reprinted. Artnet News wrote that “one pink map seemed to be everywhere during Shanghai Art Week… It quickly became a cult object, with many wondering who made it.” It was also covered by Art-Ba-Ba and Short Paper.

The second edition comes out in November 2026 and will be handed out from 10 November, during fair week. This time there will also be a website, some offline events and more writers.

上海艺术天书 Annotated Shanghai 是我和游伊一、Scene Peng（彭浩东）2025 年秋天做起来的一张粉色双语艺术地图。第一版是十月、十一月里用业余时间攒出来的，赶在上海艺术周之前印好。

地图上有美术馆、画廊、非营利机构，也有藏在地下室、洗车店、修手机铺子里的小空间。我们把城市分成几个区域，从“梧桐区”（原法租界）到苏河湾、新天地、浦东，每个地方配一段短评，像跟朋友介绍那样写——有时候嘴有点毒，但都是真心话。它不太像导览，更像一本带点体温的城市观察笔记。艺术家 Leon Eckert（上海纽约大学 IMA）作为特邀合作艺术家参与了进来。

第一版印了 6000 份，放在城里十多个取阅点，很快就被拿完了，后来又加印了一次。Artnet News 写道，艺术周期间“一张粉色地图好像到处都是……很快成了一件 cult 物件，很多人都在打听是谁做的”。Art-Ba-Ba 和 Short Paper 也做了报道。

第二版会在 2026 年 11 月出，11 月 10 日起随博览会周开始派发。这次还会有一个网站、一些线下活动，也会邀请更多人一起来写。
